Oscar-winning British film director Anthony Minghella died this morning (March 18, UK Time), at the age of 54. A spokesman said the director suffered a brain haemorrhage at 5am Tuesday morning at Charing Cross Hospital in London, where he had undergone a routine operation on his neck.

Anthony Minghella won an Oscar Award for Best Director and a BAFTA for Best Film with The English Patient (1996). His other work includes The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Cold Mountain (2003) and Breaking And Entering (2006). He has recently completed filming of his latest work, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.
